Day Trips

There are an assortment of interesting places to visit in the north of Nicaragua that make excellent day trips. Tourist density is much lower than in areas such as Granada and San Juan del Sur so you are more likely to see what it is really like in Nicaragua than in those areas. You are also more likely to find some good deals on locally made products.

While we have no regular scheduled day trips, here are some of the options available. In most cases, the trip will include travel in a private van with a guide. The exception is our "Travel Like a Nica" adventures where you will use local transit.

Day Trips by Van

  • Somoto Canyon—Travel to the canyon by van. See the canyon by boat. Option to float down on an innertube. Picnic lunch.
  • ??? [the place north of Sebacó with the artifacts]
  • El Sauce, Achuapa
  • San Juan de Limay
  • Ceramics town north of Condega

In Town

  • Getting acquainted with local transport—Travel to Estelí by bus, check out parts of town walking an on "the urbano". Lunch in town and return by bus. This is a good primer if you intend to venture out on your own in the future.
  • The Market—A morning trip to the public market. Visit leather goods shops (and maybe order some custom-made boots). Lunch at either a Chinese or Italian restaurant before returning mid-afternoon.
  • Cigar making—Cigars are big business in Estelí. Tobacco is grown nearby and there are many factories in town. Visit a factory to see how cigars are made. Afterwords, lunch in town before returning to the finca.
  • Medical trip—Estelí sports reasonable doctors, dentists and opticians. Get introduced and check out your options. A bi-lingual guide will help you out.

Events

There are numerous local festivals throughout the year. They include horse shows, parades and lots more. These trips could be for a few hours, most of a day or overnight. See our events calendar for more information.
