Access Road
The first project was to repair the access road. The beginning of the property is about 2 kilometers from the main road. Add to that the need for about another 700 meters of road to get to the main building. The existing road was all but impassible by anything less than a large truck or motorcycle. Annual repairs by the neighbors were little more than filling up the major holes with a bit of dirt.
We realized we need a permanent, year-round road that can be accessed by a normal passenger car. With a substantial amount of rain for part of the year, it was clear we needed to deal with runoff. The decision was made to make cement gutters and then pave the road by cementing rocks in place. This photo shows a sample of this type of construction. In the foreground is a section of completed road. In the background, the crew is preparing the gutters and the rock surface for cementing.
One of our neighbors, Don Rosa, donated the rocks we are using. You could call it a win-win situation as we get rock for free and he gets his land cleared of rocks.
Our goal is to have the road work finished before the rainy season starts. May 1 is the date we are shooting for.
