Lettuce
While lettuce is not a common crop in Nicaragua, many varieties are grown in our area. We purchase organic grown lettuce from local farmers.
Plantain
Plantain (platano in Spanish) grows like and looks like a banana. Plantains are starchier than bananas and must be cooled before eating.
Two common foods prepared from plantains are tajadas and tostones.
Bananas
The banana is as close as you can get to a weed in this region. While seriously grown commercially, bananas grow all over the country.
Because they grow in so many different areas of the country there really is no "banana season". Expect to find them year round with some of them coming from our farm.
Guava
Guava (guyaba in Spanish) grows on the farm. What I didn't know but learned from our caretaker is that they come in two colors—green like you are used to and pink. The outside of the fruit is the same green color but the meat is pink.
How can you tell which is which? The clue is in the leaves. If the leaves are splattered with pink, the inside of the fruit will be pink.

Crops
All of our farm crops will be organically grown. What we don't want to do is compete with the organic farmers of our neighbor La Garnacha. Thus, we are calling our farming efforts an "experimental farm". What that means is that if a crop that can be grown in Tisey is available locally, we will buy and use it. On the other hand, we want to develop new crops that can be grown in the area.
